was
were

Past Simple: was / were

English: Use was/were for the verb be in the past. Use was with I/he/she/it and were with you/we/they.

Ελληνικά: Το be στον Past Simple γίνεται was/were. Βάζουμε was με I/he/she/it και were με you/we/they.

  • He was a king.
  • She was a famous painter.
  • They were in Macedonia.
  • We were at the museum yesterday.
  • Was she famous?

Past Simple regular verbs

English: Many verbs take -ed in the past: visit → visited, work → worked. If the verb ends in consonant + y, change y to ied: study → studied.

Ελληνικά: Πολλά ρήματα παίρνουν -ed στον Past Simple. Αν τελειώνουν σε σύμφωνο + y, το y γίνεται ied.

  • He visited Egypt.
  • She worked in London.
  • They played in the theatre.
  • He studied history.
  • The explorer travelled far.

Past Simple spelling

English: Remember common spelling changes: stop → stopped, travel → travelled, study → studied, live → lived.

Ελληνικά: Προσέχουμε αλλαγές στην ορθογραφία: stop-stopped, travel-travelled, study-studied, live-lived.

  • The bus stopped near the museum.
  • They travelled to Greece.
  • She studied science.
  • He lived in Athens.

Irregular past verbs

English: Some important verbs do not take -ed. Learn their past forms: go-went, see-saw, write-wrote, make-made, have-had, become-became.

Ελληνικά: Μερικά βασικά ρήματα είναι ανώμαλα και δεν παίρνουν -ed. Τα μαθαίνουμε ξεχωριστά.

  • go – went
  • see – saw
  • write – wrote
  • make – made
  • have – had
  • become – became

Past Simple negatives

English: Use didn’t + base verb for negative sentences. The main verb stays simple: didn’t go, didn’t write, didn’t visit.

Ελληνικά: Στην άρνηση βάζουμε didn’t + απλό ρήμα. Το βασικό ρήμα μένει απλό.

  • He didn’t travel to Egypt.
  • She didn’t write a poem.
  • They didn’t live in Rome.
  • We didn’t visit the castle.

Past Simple questions

English: Use did + subject + base verb for questions. Use question words like where, when, what and why before did.

Ελληνικά: Στις ερωτήσεις βάζουμε did + υποκείμενο + απλό ρήμα. Πριν από το did μπαίνουν where, when, what, why.

  • Did he travel to Egypt?
  • Where did she live?
  • When did he become king?
  • What did they discover?
  • Why did you visit the museum?

Past time words

English: Use past time expressions to make the time clear: yesterday, last week, in 1990, two years ago.

Ελληνικά: Χρησιμοποιούμε χρονικές λέξεις παρελθόντος για να είναι ξεκάθαρο πότε έγινε κάτι.

  • I visited the museum yesterday.
  • She lived in Paris in 1990.
  • They travelled to Crete last year.
  • He painted this picture two years ago.

Biography order

English: Use first, then, after that and finally to put life events in order.

Past Simple negatives

  • He didn’t travel by plane.
  • They didn’t live in Athens.

  • played /d/
  • visited /id/
