Present Simple for customs

English: Use Present Simple for habits, traditions and things that happen every year. With he/she/it we usually add -s or -es: sings, decorates, watches. It describes what usually happens, not what is happening now.

Ελληνικά: Χρησιμοποιούμε Present Simple για συνήθειες και έθιμα που γίνονται κάθε χρόνο. Με he/she/it βάζουμε συνήθως -s ή -es. Δεν μιλά για τώρα, αλλά για κάτι που γίνεται συνήθως.

  • Children sing carols every Christmas.
  • My family decorates the tree in December.
  • Santa brings presents in stories.
  • People cook special food at Christmas.

Present Continuous for now

English: Use am/is/are + verb-ing for actions happening now or around now. We often use words like now, today, at the moment and Look!

Ελληνικά: Χρησιμοποιούμε am/is/are + ρήμα σε -ing για πράξεις που γίνονται τώρα. Συχνές λέξεις: now, today, at the moment, Look!

  • Kostas is visiting New York now.
  • They are decorating the tree.
  • I am writing a Christmas card.
  • Look! The children are singing carols.

Present Simple vs Present Continuous

English: Choose the tense from the meaning. Every year / usually / at Christmas = Present Simple. Now / today / at the moment / Look! = Present Continuous.

Ελληνικά: Διαλέγουμε χρόνο από το νόημα. Every year/usually/at Christmas = Present Simple. Now/today/at the moment/Look! = Present Continuous.

  • Every year we send cards.
  • Today we are making cards.
  • Mum usually bakes cookies.
  • Mum is baking cookies now.

Sense verbs: look / smell / taste / feel / sound

English: These verbs describe what something seems like. After them we usually use an adjective: looks beautiful, smells delicious, tastes sweet, feels soft, sounds happy.

Ελληνικά: Τα ρήματα αυτά δείχνουν πώς φαίνεται/μυρίζει/έχει γεύση/νιώθεται/ακούγεται κάτι. Μετά βάζουμε συνήθως επίθετο.

  • The cookies smell delicious.
  • She looks excited.
  • This cake tastes sweet.
  • The scarf feels warm.
  • The song sounds happy.

Imperatives for instructions

English: Use the base verb to give instructions: mix, add, cut, bake, put. Do not use you before the verb in normal instructions.

Ελληνικά: Για οδηγίες χρησιμοποιούμε το απλό ρήμα: mix, add, cut, bake, put. Συνήθως δεν βάζουμε you πριν από το ρήμα.

  • Mix the flour and sugar.
  • Add the honey.
  • Cut the cookies into stars.
  • Bake for 20 minutes.

Sequencing words

English: Use first, next, then, after that and finally to show the order of actions in a recipe, card or project.

Ελληνικά: Χρησιμοποιούμε first, next, then, after that και finally για να δείξουμε τη σειρά σε συνταγή, κάρτα ή project.

  • First, put flour in a bowl.
  • Next, add sugar and butter.
  • Then, stir the mixture.
  • After that, bake the cookies.
  • Finally, serve them on a plate.

Present Continuous: now actions

English: Use am/is/are + -ing for actions happening now.

Ελληνικά: Για κάτι που γίνεται τώρα βάζουμε am/is/are + -ing.

  • Mum is baking cookies.
  • We are decorating the classroom.
  • I am writing a card.

Present Simple for traditions

English: Use Present Simple for customs that happen every year.

Ελληνικά: Για έθιμα που γίνονται κάθε χρόνο χρησιμοποιούμε Present Simple.

  • Children sing carols every Christmas.
  • People exchange presents.
  • Families cook special food.

Sequencing words

English: Use first, next, then, after that and finally to show order.

Ελληνικά: Οι λέξεις first, next, then, after that, finally δείχνουν σειρά.
