Adjectives (Επίθετα)

Adjectives (επίθετα) describe nouns. They tell us what a person, animal, place or thing is like.

1. What are Adjectives? (Τι είναι τα επίθετα;)

Adjectives give more information about a noun: size, colour, age, feeling, quality or opinion.

Pattern: adjective + noun → a big dog, a red bag, a happy child

Examples

  • The dog is small. → Ο σκύλος είναι μικρός.
  • She has got a blue pencil. → Έχει ένα μπλε μολύβι.
  • This is an interesting story. → Αυτή είναι μια ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία.

2. Comparative Adjectives (Συγκριτικός βαθμός)

We use the comparative to compare two people, animals or things.

Pattern: noun + be + comparative + than + noun

RuleExamples
Short adjectives: +ersmall → smaller, tall → taller
ending in -e: +rnice → nicer, large → larger
consonant + y: -ierhappy → happier, easy → easier
short vowel + consonant: double consonant + erbig → bigger, hot → hotter
long adjectives: more + adjectivebeautiful → more beautiful, interesting → more interesting

Examples

  • A giraffe is taller than a horse. → Η καμηλοπάρδαλη είναι ψηλότερη από το άλογο.
  • English is easier than Chinese for me. → Τα Αγγλικά είναι ευκολότερα από τα Κινέζικα για μένα.

3. Superlative Adjectives (Υπερθετικός βαθμός)

We use the superlative to compare one person, animal or thing with a whole group.

Pattern: the + superlative + noun

Irregular adjectives

  • good → better → the best
  • bad → worse → the worst
  • far → farther/further → the farthest/furthest

Examples

  • The elephant is the biggest animal here. → Ο ελέφαντας είναι το μεγαλύτερο ζώο εδώ.
  • This is the most interesting book. → Αυτό είναι το πιο ενδιαφέρον βιβλίο.

4. As…as / Not as…as

We use as…as to say that two things are equal, and not as…as to show they are not equal.

  • My bag is as heavy as your bag. → Η τσάντα μου είναι τόσο βαριά όσο η δική σου.
  • This exercise is not as difficult as the test. → Αυτή η άσκηση δεν είναι τόσο δύσκολη όσο το τεστ.
