The Future (Μέλλοντας)

In English, we can talk about the future in different ways. The most common forms here are will (θα), be going to (πρόκειται να / σκοπεύω να) and Present Continuous with future meaning (Ενεστώτας Διαρκείας με μελλοντική σημασία).

I think it will rain. I am going to study. I am meeting Anna tomorrow.

1. Future with WILL (Μέλλοντας με will / θα)

📘 Theory (Θεωρία)

We use will to talk about quick decisions, predictions, promises and offers.

  • Quick decision (γρήγορη απόφαση): I’m tired. I will go to bed.
  • Prediction (πρόβλεψη): I think it will rain tomorrow.
  • Promise (υπόσχεση): I will help you.
  • Offer (προσφορά): I will carry your bag.

🧩 Form (Σχηματισμός)

2. Future with BE GOING TO (πρόκειται να / σκοπεύω να)

📘 Theory (Θεωρία)

We use be going to for plans, intentions and predictions based on what we can see now.

  • Plan / intention (σχέδιο / πρόθεση): I am going to study tonight.
  • Visible evidence (κάτι που φαίνεται τώρα): Look at the clouds! It is going to rain.

We use the Present Continuous for future arrangements: plans that are fixed or already organized.

  • Fixed arrangement (κανονισμένη συνάντηση/δραστηριότητα): I am meeting my friend tomorrow.
  • Organized plan (οργανωμένο σχέδιο): We are visiting the museum on Friday.
