Comparatives: short adjectives

English: Use adjective + -er + than to compare two people or things. Short adjectives usually take -er: tall → taller, cheap → cheaper, fast → faster.

Ελληνικά: Για σύγκριση δύο ανθρώπων ή πραγμάτων βάζουμε επίθετο + -er + than. Τα σύντομα επίθετα παίρνουν συνήθως -er.

  • This bike is cheaper than that bike.
  • A car is faster than a bike.
  • Maria is taller than Anna.
  • My bag is smaller than yours.

Comparatives: long adjectives

English: Use more + adjective + than with longer adjectives such as expensive, interesting, beautiful, comfortable and exciting.

Ελληνικά: Με μεγάλα επίθετα χρησιμοποιούμε more + επίθετο + than.

  • This camera is more expensive than that book.
  • The film is more interesting than the game.
  • This present is more useful than a toy.
  • The red bag is more beautiful than the black bag.

Superlatives: short adjectives

English: Use the + adjective + -est to show the top one in a group. We often add in the class, in the town or in the world.

Ελληνικά: Για το πιο … σε μια ομάδα βάζουμε the + επίθετο + -est. Συχνά προσθέτουμε in the class/town/world.

  • This is the tallest building in the town.
  • He is the fastest runner in the class.
  • This is the cheapest present in the shop.
  • It is the longest river in the world.

Superlatives: long adjectives

English: Use the most + adjective with longer adjectives. Do not use more with superlatives; use the most.

Ελληνικά: Με μεγάλα επίθετα βάζουμε the most + επίθετο. Για υπερθετικό δεν λέμε more, λέμε the most.

  • It is the most expensive present.
  • This is the most interesting book.
  • She is the most popular singer.
  • That is the most beautiful picture.

Spelling rules

English: Some short adjectives change spelling: big → bigger → the biggest; happy → happier → the happiest; nice → nicer → the nicest.

Ελληνικά: Μερικά σύντομα επίθετα αλλάζουν ορθογραφία: big-bigger-biggest, happy-happier-happiest, nice-nicer-nicest.

  • big – bigger – the biggest
  • hot – hotter – the hottest
  • happy – happier – the happiest
  • nice – nicer – the nicest

Irregular adjectives

English: Good, bad and far are irregular. Learn them as special forms: good-better-best, bad-worse-worst, far-farther/further-farthest/furthest.

Ελληνικά: Τα good, bad και far είναι ανώμαλα. Τα μαθαίνουμε ξεχωριστά.

  • This book is better than that one.
  • It is the best present.
  • This is worse than yesterday.
  • That was the worst score.

as … as

English: Use as + adjective + as to say two things are equal. Use not as … as to say they are not equal.

Ελληνικά: Με as + επίθετο + as λέμε ότι δύο πράγματα είναι ίσα. Με not as … as λέμε ότι δεν είναι ίσα.

  • This book is as interesting as that book.
  • My bag is as heavy as yours.
  • This toy is not as expensive as the camera.
  • A bike is not as fast as a car.

Giving reasons

English: Use I think / In my opinion and because to explain your choice.

Ελληνικά: Χρησιμοποιούμε I think/In my opinion και because για να εξηγήσουμε την επιλογή μας.

  • I think the bike is better because it is useful.
  • In my opinion, this is the best present.
  • I prefer the book because it is interesting.
  • For me, the camera is more exciting.

Short adjective spelling

English: Double the final consonant in big, hot and thin before -er/-est. Change y to i in happy.

Ελληνικά: Σε big/hot/thin διπλασιάζουμε το τελευταίο σύμφωνο. Σε happy το y γίνεται i.

  • big – bigger – the biggest
  • hot – hotter – the hottest
  • happy – happier – the happiest

Irregular comparisons

English: Good, bad and far have special forms.

Ελληνικά: Τα good, bad και far έχουν ανώμαλους τύπους.

  • good – better – the best
  • bad – worse – the worst
  • far – farther/further – the farthest/furthest

as … as

English: Use as + adjective + as when two things are equal.

Ελληνικά: Με as … as λέμε ότι δύο πράγματα είναι το ίδιο.

  • My bag is as heavy as yours.
  • This game is not as expensive as that one.
