Grammar

Used to: form

used to + base verb μιλάει για παλιές συνήθειες ή παλιές καταστάσεις που δεν ισχύουν πια.

  • I used to play with Lego.
  • She used to wear a blue uniform.
  • People used to travel by tram.

Negative form

Στην άρνηση γράφουμε didn’t use to + base verb. Προσοχή: όχι “didn’t used to”.

  • I didn’t use to drink coffee.
  • He didn’t use to wear glasses.
  • They didn’t use to go by underground.

Questions and short answers

Στην ερώτηση γράφουμε Did + subject + use to…?

  • Did you use to be afraid of the dark? — Yes, I did. / No, I didn’t.
  • What did you use to do at weekends?
  • Where did people use to travel in the past?

Used to vs Past Simple

used to = κάτι που γινόταν συχνά παλιά. Past Simple = μία συγκεκριμένη πράξη στο παρελθόν.

  • I used to play football every Saturday.
  • Yesterday I played basketball.
  • My grandmother used to wear bell-bottomed pants.
  • She bought a new skirt in 1968.

Asking for information

Για πληροφορίες σε μουσείο/σταθμό χρησιμοποιούμε ευγενικές ερωτήσεις.

  • What time does the museum open?
  • How much is admission for pupils?
  • Where is the nearest underground station?
  • Can you tell me the phone number, please?

Asking for directions

Ξεκινάμε ευγενικά με Excuse me και ζητάμε τον δρόμο.

  • Excuse me, how can I get to the museum?
  • Could you show me the way to Covent Garden?
  • Can you tell me where the ticket office is, please?

Giving directions

Δίνουμε οδηγίες με σύντομες εντολές και prepositions of place.

  • Go straight on.
  • Turn left at the traffic lights.
  • Take the first turning on the right.
  • It’s opposite the station.
  • It’s between the bank and the museum.
  • You can’t miss it!

Prepositions of place

Χρήσιμες λέξεις για να πούμε πού βρίσκεται κάτι.

  • near = κοντά
  • opposite = απέναντι
  • behind = πίσω από
  • in front of = μπροστά από
  • between = ανάμεσα
  • on the corner of = στη γωνία

Informal letter structure

Ένα φιλικό γράμμα χρειάζεται χαιρετισμό, παραγράφους και κλείσιμο.

Ένα leaflet δίνει γρήγορες και καθαρές πληροφορίες στον επισκέπτη.

  • Opening hours: Sat–Thu 10:00–18:00.
  • Admission: adults £5.95, pupils £4.50.
  • Location: Covent Garden.
  • Activities: guided tour, treasure hunt, gift shop.
  • Rules: Keep your ticket. Don’t touch the exhibits.
