There is / There are

English: Use there is for one place or thing and there are for two or more. Use a/an with one singular countable noun: There is a museum. Use some or a number with plural nouns: There are two parks.

Ελληνικά: Βάζουμε there is για ένα πράγμα/μέρος και there are για δύο ή περισσότερα. Με ένα ουσιαστικό βάζουμε συχνά a/an. Με πληθυντικό βάζουμε αριθμό ή some.

  • There is a museum near the square.
  • There is an old theatre in my town.
  • There are two parks in my town.
  • There are some shops next to the bank.

Questions with Is there / Are there

English: To ask about places, put Is there or Are there at the beginning. Answer with Yes, there is / No, there isn’t or Yes, there are / No, there aren’t.

Ελληνικά: Για να ρωτήσουμε αν υπάρχει κάτι, βάζουμε Is there ή Are there στην αρχή. Απαντάμε με there is/there isn’t ή there are/there aren’t.

  • Is there a hospital in your town? No, there isn’t.
  • Are there any cafes in the square? Yes, there are.
  • Are there two museums? No, there aren’t.

Prepositions of place

English: Prepositions help us say exactly where something is. Use next to for side by side, opposite for across the street, between for the middle of two places, behind for at the back and in front of for before something.

Ελληνικά: Οι προθέσεις τόπου δείχνουν πού βρίσκεται κάτι: next to = δίπλα, opposite = απέναντι, between = ανάμεσα, behind = πίσω, in front of = μπροστά.

  • The bank is next to the post office.
  • The cinema is opposite the park.
  • The cafe is between the museum and the library.
  • The bus stop is in front of the school.
  • The hotel is behind the supermarket.

Giving directions

English: Use short command verbs for directions: go, turn, cross, walk. Add place words to make the route clear: at the traffic lights, on the corner, on your left/right.

Ελληνικά: Για οδηγίες χρησιμοποιούμε προστακτική/απλό ρήμα: go, turn, cross, walk. Προσθέτουμε λέξεις τόπου για να είναι καθαρή η διαδρομή.

  • Go straight on.
  • Turn left at the bank.
  • Cross the street at the traffic lights.
  • Walk past the cinema.
  • The museum is on your right.

Asking for directions

English: Use polite questions when you need help: Excuse me, where is…? / How can I get to…? / Is it near here?

Ελληνικά: Όταν ζητάμε οδηγίες, χρησιμοποιούμε ευγενικές ερωτήσεις: Excuse me, where is…? / How can I get to…? / Is it near here?

  • Excuse me, where is the museum?
  • How can I get to the post office?
  • Is the library near here?
  • Can you help me, please?
  • Thank you very much.

Opinions and suggestions

English: Use I think and In my opinion to share your idea. Use Let’s, Why don’t we…? and How about…? to make suggestions. After How about, use verb + -ing.

Ελληνικά: Για γνώμη χρησιμοποιούμε I think / In my opinion. Για προτάσεις χρησιμοποιούμε Let’s, Why don’t we…? και How about…? Μετά το How about βάζουμε ρήμα σε -ing.

  • I think the museum is interesting.
  • In my opinion, the old square is beautiful.
  • Let’s visit the castle.

  • How about visiting the old theatre?

  • Excuse me, how can I get to the museum?
  • Where is the post office, please?

Ελληνικά: Για οδηγίες χρησιμοποιούμε προστακτική: go, turn, cross, walk, stop.

  • First, go straight on.
  • Then turn left at the traffic lights.
