Present Simple for routines

English: Use Present Simple for routines, habits and facts. With I/you/we/they we use the verb: I play. With he/she/it we usually add -s or -es: he plays, she watches. For have we write has.

Ελληνικά: Χρησιμοποιούμε Present Simple για πράξεις που γίνονται κάθε μέρα, συνήθειες και γενικές αλήθειες. Με I/you/we/they το ρήμα μένει απλό. Με he/she/it βάζουμε συνήθως -s ή -es. Το have γίνεται has.

  • I go to school at eight.
  • She goes to school at eight.
  • He watches TV after homework.
  • She has English on Monday.
  • We play in the yard.

Time prepositions: at / on / in

English: Use at for exact times, on for days and dates, and in for months, seasons, years and parts of the day. Remember: at night, at the weekend, in the morning, in the afternoon.

Ελληνικά: Χρησιμοποιούμε at για ακριβή ώρα, on για μέρες/ημερομηνίες και in για μήνες, εποχές, χρόνια και μέρη της ημέρας. Θυμόμαστε: at night, at the weekend, in the morning, in the afternoon.

  • School starts at 8:15.
  • We have English on Tuesday.
  • My birthday is on 10 May.
  • I study in the afternoon.
  • We go on holiday in summer.

Adverbs of frequency

English: Always, usually, often, sometimes and never tell us how often something happens. They usually go before the main verb: I usually study. With am/is/are they go after be: She is always polite.

Ελληνικά: Τα επιρρήματα συχνότητας δείχνουν πόσο συχνά γίνεται κάτι. Συνήθως μπαίνουν πριν από το κύριο ρήμα: I usually study. Με το am/is/are μπαίνουν μετά: She is always polite.

  • I always brush my teeth.
  • I usually do my homework.
  • He often helps his friends.
  • We sometimes play football at break.
  • He never eats in class.
  • She is always polite.

Do / Does questions

English: To ask questions in Present Simple, put Do or Does before the subject. Use Do with I/you/we/they and Does with he/she/it. After does, the main verb is simple: Does Anna walk? not Does Anna walks?

Ελληνικά: Για ερωτήσεις στον Present Simple βάζουμε Do ή Does πριν από το υποκείμενο. Do με I/you/we/they και Does με he/she/it. Μετά το does το βασικό ρήμα μένει απλό: Does Anna walk? όχι Does Anna walks?

  • Do you like Maths?
  • Do they play in the yard?
  • Does Anna walk to school?
  • Does he do his homework?
  • What time do lessons start?
  • Where does she live?

Short answers

English: Answer Yes/No questions with the same helper verb: Yes, I do. No, I don’t. Yes, she does. No, she doesn’t.

Ελληνικά: Στις σύντομες απαντήσεις χρησιμοποιούμε το ίδιο βοηθητικό ρήμα: do/don’t ή does/doesn’t.

  • Do you like school? Yes, I do.
  • Do they play football? No, they don’t.
  • Does he study English? Yes, he does.
  • Does she eat in class? No, she doesn’t.

Negative sentences

English: For negative sentences use don’t with I/you/we/they and doesn’t with he/she/it. After doesn’t, the verb is simple: He doesn’t play, not He doesn’t plays.

Ελληνικά: Στις αρνητικές προτάσεις βάζουμε don’t με I/you/we/they και doesn’t με he/she/it. Μετά το doesn’t το ρήμα μένει απλό.

  • I don’t walk to school.
  • We don’t have Art on Friday.
  • He doesn’t play in the classroom.
  • She doesn’t like noisy breaks.

Like / love / prefer + -ing

English: Use like, love and prefer with -ing when you talk about school activities and habits.

Ελληνικά: Με like, love και prefer βάζουμε συχνά -ing όταν μιλάμε για δραστηριότητες και συνήθειες.

  • I like reading in the library.
  • She loves drawing in Art.
  • We prefer working in groups.
  • He doesn’t like running in the yard.

because for reasons

English: Use because to explain feelings, habits and opinions about school life.

  • She is worried because the test is difficult.
  • We play outside because the weather is good.

Present Simple: spelling with he/she/it

English: With he, she and it, most verbs take -s. Verbs ending in -ch, -sh, -ss, -x, -o take -es. Study becomes studies.

Ελληνικά: Με he/she/it προσθέτουμε συνήθως -s. Σε -ch, -sh, -ss, -x, -o βάζουμε -es. Το study γίνεται studies.

  • He plays football at break.
  • She watches videos after school.
