Past Continuous form

English: Use was/were + verb-ing for an action in progress in the past. Use was with I/he/she/it and were with you/we/they.

Ελληνικά: Χρησιμοποιούμε was/were + ρήμα σε -ing για κάτι που γινόταν εκείνη τη στιγμή στο παρελθόν.

  • I was walking in the forest.
  • She was reading a story.
  • They were looking for the castle.
  • We were writing a comic.

Past Continuous negative

English: Use wasn’t / weren’t + verb-ing to say that an action was not happening in the past.

Ελληνικά: Για άρνηση βάζουμε wasn’t/weren’t + ρήμα σε -ing.

  • The hero wasn’t sleeping.
  • They weren’t hiding in the cave.
  • I wasn’t looking for the key.
  • The children weren’t shouting.

Past Continuous questions

English: Use Was/Were + subject + verb-ing for questions about what was happening.

Ελληνικά: Για ερωτήσεις βάζουμε Was/Were + υποκείμενο + ρήμα σε -ing.

  • Was she sleeping?
  • Were they walking in the forest?
  • What were you reading?
  • Where was the dragon hiding?

Past Simple + Past Continuous

English: Use Past Continuous for the background action and Past Simple for the sudden action that interrupts it.

Ελληνικά: Το Past Continuous δίνει το σκηνικό και το Past Simple δείχνει το ξαφνικό γεγονός.

  • She was sleeping when the phone rang.
  • They were walking when they saw a wolf.
  • I was reading when the door opened.
  • The prince was running when he dropped the map.

while / when

English: Use while with the longer action in progress and when with the sudden action. Sometimes when can introduce either action, but this unit practises the common pattern.

Ελληνικά: Το while συνήθως μπαίνει με τη μεγάλη δράση που ήταν σε εξέλιξη, και το when με το ξαφνικό γεγονός.

  • While he was running, he dropped the map.
  • I was reading when she arrived.
  • While they were walking, they found a key.
  • The fairy appeared when the girl opened the box.

-ing spelling

English: Remember spelling changes: make → making, run → running, lie → lying, study → studying.

Ελληνικά: Προσέχουμε την ορθογραφία στο -ing: make-making, run-running, lie-lying, study-studying.

  • make – making
  • run – running
  • hide – hiding
  • write – writing
  • swim – swimming

Story connectors

English: Use connectors to organize a story: once upon a time, one day, suddenly, then, after that, finally.

Ελληνικά: Χρησιμοποιούμε συνδέσμους για να οργανώσουμε την ιστορία.

  • Once upon a time, there was a princess.
  • One day, she found a key.
  • Suddenly, the door opened.
  • Finally, everyone was safe.

Adjectives for stories

English: Use adjectives to make stories richer: brave, scary, dark, quiet, magical, strange, dangerous, happy.

Ελληνικά: Χρησιμοποιούμε επίθετα για να κάνουμε την ιστορία πιο ζωντανή.

  • The forest was dark and quiet.
  • The hero was brave.
  • It was a magical key.
  • The ending was happy.

Past Continuous forms

English: Use was with I/he/she/it and were with you/we/they. Add not for negatives.

Ελληνικά: Χρησιμοποιούμε was με I/he/she/it και were με you/we/they. Για άρνηση προσθέτουμε not.

  • I was walking.
  • They were hiding.
  • The princess wasn’t sleeping.

Interrupted actions

English: The longer action uses Past Continuous. The shorter action uses Past Simple.

Ελληνικά: Η μεγάλη δράση μπαίνει Past Continuous. Το ξαφνικό γεγονός μπαίνει Past Simple.

  • The hero was crossing the bridge when the dragon appeared.
  • They were looking for treasure when they heard a noise.

Story punctuation and speech

  • What were you doing?
