Gerunds (Γερούνδια)
A gerund is the -ing form of a verb used like a noun.
1. What is a gerund?
A gerund looks like a verb with -ing, but it works as a noun.
verb + ing = gerund
Examples
- Swimming is fun. → Το κολύμπι είναι διασκεδαστικό.
- Reading helps you learn. → Το διάβασμα σε βοηθά να μάθεις.
- Dancing makes me happy. → Ο χορός με κάνει χαρούμενο/η.
2. Gerund as the subject
A gerund can be the subject of a sentence.
| Gerund | Sentence |
|---|---|
| Swimming | Swimming is good exercise. |
| Reading | Reading is interesting. |
| Playing | Playing outside is fun. |
3. Verbs followed by gerunds
Some verbs are often followed by a gerund.
| Verb | Example |
|---|---|
| like | I like playing football. |
| love | She loves dancing. |
| enjoy | We enjoy watching films. |
| hate | He hates cleaning his room. |
| prefer | They prefer walking to school. |
Careful: After enjoy, use a gerund: I enjoy reading, not I enjoy to read.
4. Gerunds after prepositions
After a preposition, we usually use a gerund.
- She is good at drawing. → Είναι καλή στη ζωγραφική.
- Thank you for helping me. → Ευχαριστώ που με βοήθησες.
- He is interested in learning English. → Ενδιαφέρεται να μάθει Αγγλικά.
- I’m tired of waiting. → Βαρέθηκα/κουράστηκα να περιμένω.
5. Spelling rules for -ing
| Rule | Examples |
|---|---|
| Most verbs: +ing | play → playing, read → reading |
| Verbs ending in -e: drop -e + ing | dance → dancing, make → making |
| Short vowel + consonant: double consonant | run → running, swim → swimming |
| ie → y + ing | lie → lying |
