Unit 4 - Lesson 2

Verbs of the Senses

What are the verbs of the senses?
We use these verbs to say how something looks, tastes, smells or feels.

  • look (appearance)
  • taste (food & drinks)
  • smell (odours)
  • feel (emotions & touch)

Important: After these verbs we use an adjective (good, delicious, happy…), not an adverb.

1) Form

I / You / We / They → look, taste, smell, feel

He / She / It → looks, tastes, smells, feels

2) Examples

  • The pancakes taste delicious.
  • The flowers smell nice.
  • She looks happy.
  • This pillow feels soft.

⭐ Extra Tip (for 5th Grade)

We usually do NOT use the -ing form with these verbs.

Unit 5 - Lesson 2

Abilities – Obligations – Advice

Ικανότητες – Υποχρεώσεις – Συμβουλές

Στα Αγγλικά χρησιμοποιούμε κάποια ειδικά ρήματα για να μιλήσουμε για:

  • ικανότητες (τι μπορούμε να κάνουμε)
  • υποχρεώσεις (τι πρέπει να κάνουμε)
  • συμβουλές (τι είναι καλό να κάνουμε)

Αυτά τα ρήματα λέγονται modal verbs και είναι: can, must, should.

🔹 Τα modal verbs:

  • ΔΕΝ αλλάζουν μορφή (δεν παίρνουν -s)
  • ακολουθούνται πάντα από γυμνό απαρέμφατο (χωρίς to)

A. Abilities – CAN / CAN’T

Χρησιμοποιούμε το can για να πούμε τι μπορούμε ή δεν μπορούμε να κάνουμε στο παρόν ή στο μέλλον.

Κατάφαση: can + verb
Άρνηση: cannot / can’t + verb
Ερώτηση: Can + subject + verb?

📌 Παραδείγματα

  • He can speak three languages.
  • I can swim very well.
  • We can meet later.
  • I can’t ride a bike.

Short answers

B. Obligations – MUST / MUSTN’T

Χρησιμοποιούμε το must για να πούμε τι πρέπει ή τι απαγορεύεται να κάνουμε.

Κατάφαση: must + verb
Άρνηση: must not / mustn’t + verb

📌 Παραδείγματα

  • I must go now. It’s late.
  • You must finish your homework.
  • You mustn’t run in the classroom.
  • We mustn’t be late.

⚠️ mustn’t = ΑΠΑΓΟΡΕΥΕΤΑΙ (όχι απλώς «δεν χρειάζεται»)

C. Advice – SHOULD / SHOULDN’T

Χρησιμοποιούμε το should για να δώσουμε συμβουλές.

Κατάφαση: should + verb
Άρνηση: should not / shouldn’t + verb
